Arthur Rackham is one of the most famous of children’s illustators.  His Alice pictures are as famous as those of Tenniel, who did the originals.  Rackham’s Alice in Wonderland was published in 1907. as soon as it was legally possible to do so, in London.  Allie Pendragon loves these illustrations. This Alice is so pensive and elegant with her soft dress and her lovely hair.

Alice’s mom has a wonderful collection of First Edition Alice In Wonderland books.  Alice Pendragon has grown up loving this story and she loves looking at all the different illustrated versions that her mother owns.  These are some of her favorite illustrations.

The original illustrations were in black and white.  The illustrator was John Tenniell.  Only  a few of the pictures were in color. The first edition of the now classic Alice In Wonderland was published in London in 1865.

In 1907, Bessie Pease Guttman, another famous illustrator created Alice as a very young child.  Her Alice had dark hair.  Allie likes this picture because Alice looks so small compared to the caterpillar.

Gwynedd Hudson’s books were published in New York and London simultaneously in 1922. Hudson’s Alice is quite sophisticated, in a white dress with black trim and a white organdy pinafore.  Her hair is very long and very light blonde.

Mabel Lucie Atwell created her illustrated version of the Alice story in 1910.  This version was published in London, and Atwell’s Alice was also a very young girl, with reddish hair, tied back in a bow.

Maria Kirk created  still different Alice in her very early 1904 illustration.  Her Alice has long dark curls, a golden yellow dress and a really feisty attitude.

The A. E. Jackson book was published in both New York and London, 1914 and 1915.  This Alice was an older child in a then very fashionable pink dress.
